Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: A variety of sanitary items and boxes of mosquito nets all costing at TShs. 1,500,000/ nearly US$1000:00 was donated by Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Pwani to the Maternity Ward of Muhimbili Medical Centre. The project was part of observation of "World Peace Day" by the club.
District Governor Lion Wilson N. Ndesanjo accompanied by the First Lady of the Sub District, Lion Florence and the club President Lady Pushpa Shah jointly handed over the items to the Matron, Sister Haule in the Maternity Ward. Later, some packages were also given to the new mothers in the ward.
The choice of sanitary items and mosquito nets was the club's idea to reduce child mortality rate due to life-threatening malaria disease. The club President said that the whole idea was falling under the United Nations Millenium Development Goals jointly being implemented by the Tanzania Government and the United Nations.
Governor Willy Ndesanjo said that he was quite impressed by the standard of cleanliness being maintained in the Maternity Ward and encouraged the Muhimbili Staff and the patients to keep up with the hygienic discipline. He congratulated the club's choice of the items and the venue as well.
The attendance of the Governor at the club project was part of the club visitations programme. Later in the evening he was scheduled to participate in the club's board of directors meeting and late supper as a fellowship of members and their families.
