LIONS QUEST PROGRAMME NEEDED IN TANZANIA

Some of the participants in the three-day Lions Quest Seminar at Bagamoyo which commenced today and will officially be closed by District Governor Lion Wilson N. Ndesanjo  on Saturday afternoon.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Lions Quest Programme which is an international educational campaign to discourage misuse of drugs and intoxicants, needs to be implemented in schools and in families in Tanzania. This opinion was conveyed by Bagamoyo District Commissioner Hon. Ahmed Kipozi when he officially opened a three-day seminar for thirty secondary school teachers at Bagamoyo today.

Speaking to the teachers and some senior Lion Members, he said: “Since our country achieved independence more than fifty years ago, we have been at war against illiteracy, disease and ignorance. While we have registered greater successes in those fields, a devil brings out his ugly head to destroy the good character of our youth.”

He said that “devil” comes in the form of harmful drugs, excessive use of liquor, smoking of bhangi and charas, chewing of harmful tobacco containing harmful intoxicants, cocaine, brown sugar, mandrax etc. He further pointed out that these harmful stuff were available in the underground markets!

He explained to the teachers that under such circumstances, youths, particularly school children easily fall into the trap and their lives end in miseries. He concluded: “This is where you teachers come into the picture to assist and  this is where you Lions come into the picture of trying to arrest the situation before it goes out of hand.”

The District Commissioner called on the teachers to make use of every minute of the three-day seminar, to study hard and to impart the knowledge to their fellow teachers and if possible to families.

Earlier, Past District Governor and Coordinator of the LQP, Lion Abdul Majid Khan explained the lengthy story about the Lions Quest which is being implemented throughout the world by Lions Clubs International. This was the 8^th workshop to be held in Bagamoyo after similar ones which were held in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Dodoma, Morogoro, Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza and Arusha. 

 More information: In terms of all logistics and basic expenses of the three-days workshop, the Lions Clubs International incurs expenditure of approximately TShs. 13,680,000/= for thirty teachers.

The programme has so far recorded more than 15 million youths all over the world to have taken part in the LQ Workshops and more than 700,000 teachers and other adults have been trained to impart the knowledge in schools and community centres.

PWANI ALWAYS IN FRONT LINE!

Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Pwani was always in the front line to implement fresh ideas with zeal and great success, District Governor Lion Wilson N. Ndesanjo said at the World Lunch Relay organized by the club for Lions, pupils from a blind school and an orphanage centre.

“The Pwani Club seems to be the only club in the Sub District which has heeded the call of the International President Barry J. palmer for holding the World Lunch Relay throughout the world where Lions Clubs operate,” the Governor said. He congratulated the newly formed Leo Club of Pwani (under the umbrella of L.C. Pwani) for handling the function which turned out to be lively, exciting and  with full of fun.

Club President Lion Pushpa Shah appeared to be very satisfied with the turn out of visitors and main guests who also included 2^nd Vice District Governor Lion Haiderali Gangji, several District Officers and a good number of businessmen and volunteers who supported the event.

In her speech, she observed philosophically that what ever  good things we do for others, it automatically comes back to us in one way or the other. And she added: “We must not only try to do more but to do better by cherishing the dream of  the Founder of Lionism , Melvin Jones”.

Fifteen blind young boys and girls from Uhuru Mchanganyiko Primary School led by their Matron Aisha Mkumbo and Volunteer Mohini Nathumal Sajnani appeared well dressed in their school uniform. They gave a chorus of three songs which touched the heart of almost every body at the Himalaya  Ridge Hotel.

More info: A get together will be held on 27^th April at Uhuru Mchanganyiko where pupils from Buguruni Deaf School and Yombo Vocational Training School will attend.

The Makini Organization, a group of youngsters all dressed in black attire danced to the tune of Maichel Jackson and other beats and kept the audience well entertained.

The afternoon meal was tasty oriental dish “biriyani” and soft drinks. Donors included  Mrs. Shaida Farooqi, Rafiq Ghartey, Seema Mittal, Shamim Abdul Rasul, Mohini Nathumal Sajnani,Chemi-Cotex, and Diviash Shah. The entire function was ably managed by MC, Lion Rizwan Qadri.

DEADLINE FOR REPORTS 15TH APRIL

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: The countdown for the forthcoming 11th Annual MD 411 Convention at Kisumu, Kenya, has started and with it preparations are in top gear.

Cabinet Secretary Lion Kishore Simzia has called on to all the Cabinet and District Officers to observe the deadline of 15th April as the last day for submitting their reports. This deadline will give the Cabinet secretary just a few days to compile a comprehensive report of the District Officers at the Third and last Cabinet meeting of Sub District 411B.

The Cabinet Secretary cautioned that failure to meet the deadline, the concerned District Officers will have to bring fifty copies of their reports to the Cabinet Meeting well ahead of the commencement time for distribution to the delegates. 

Cabinet Secretary Lion Kishore Simzia has set 15th April as deadline  for submitting reports from Cabinet and District Officers for presentation at the 3rd Cabinet Meeting in Kisumu, Kenya, venue of the 11th Annual MD 411 Convention.

The Governor's final report and that of the Cabinet Secretary's Cabinet Minutes and District Officers reports are very important at the 3rd Cabinet Meeting. This will reflect the almost twelve months of humanitarian services provided by 43 Lions Clubs in Tanzania and Uganda. Hence, reports will ultimately be considered as historical reference materials in the history of Sub District 411B.

GOVERNOR VISITS ARUSHA

Arusha, Tanzania: District Governor Lion Wilson Ndesanjo and First Lady Florense visited all the 42 Lions Clubs in Tanzania and Uganda, the last visitation being in Arusha.

The Governor's entourage visited Mt. Meru Club in Arusha where a hectic programme was prepared by club leaders and district officers. The Governor met the Deputy Mayor of Arusha and held friendly and common issues of interest both for the Lions and in the interest of the country. 

The Governor participated in the distribution of food in the Eye Ward of St Elizabeth Health Centre and later at Plaster House where children are recuperating from corrective surgery. Sixty boys and girls are at the Plaster House, some undergoing plastic surgery due to burns and injuries. 

A grand banquet in honour of the Governor and his First Lady Florense was held later in the evening where the PDG/PMCC Lion Shem Bageine who is also a Minister for East African Affairs attended the banquet. The President of L.C. Moshi Kibo Julian Jones and PDG Himat Shah and several District Officers were also at the banquet.

Two new members were inducted by the Governor at the banquet.

KAMPALA CENTRAL SETS RECORD!

Kampala, Uganda: Twenty year old Lions Club of Kampala Central has set the new record by being the only club with the highest number of members "one hundred" in the Multiple District 411 composed of Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and the Seychelles.

Before  the end of this current Lionistic Year, very reliable sources indicate that ten more Quality Members are in the line ready for taking up membership of this largest and most active club in Sub District 411B.

Beaming with a big smile and satisfaction, District Governor Lion Wilson Ndesanjo informed the Blog of the rising number of members in the Sub District 411B as 1,220  "as at today". He said that before we congregate at Kisumu, Kenya for the forthcoming annual multiple district convention, we need only thirty more new members to hit the 'bull's eye'.

The Governor pointed out that the ideal venue to beat the drum about getting more people to join the organization is on next Sunday, during the Global World Relay Lunch Day (GWRLD). The day is being observed with fellowship lunch organized by Lions  throughout the world.

In Dar es Salaam, Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Pwani has organized GWRLD on Sunday 6th April at the Himalaya Ridge where the District Governor Lion Wilson Ndesanjo has been invited as the Chief Guest. 

Forty  young boys and girls from an Orphanage Centre and twenty blind young boys and girls will also participate.

The Club Secretary of Pwani Lion Rizwan Qadri said that more than sixty prominent Lions have been invited to participate in the fellowship lunch at the Himalaya Ridge on Sunday morning from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

ROUND TABLE MEETING

Delegations of the Ministry of Health & Social Welfare and Lions Clubs International discussing strategies for the forthcoming campaign of measles and rubella immunization week in Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: A round-table conference hosted by Ministry of Health & Social Welfare and attended by a delegation of Lions was held in Dar es Salaam to discuss Lions' participation in the forthcoming national immunization week of Measles and Rubella in Tanzania.

In a nutshell, the meeting discussed about Lions' participation in the immunization campaign in terms of advocacy, communication and social mobilisation. The country-wide immunization programme will take off from Wednesday 17th September to 23rd.

On international level, Lions Clubs International has partnered with GAVI Alliance, Bill & Melinda  Gates Foundation and the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID) in the international campaign against the dreadful killer disease of measles and rubella.

Info on the infection: Measles is a highly contagious viral illness characterised by fever, malaise, rash, cough, coryza and conjuctivitis. The virus is spread by coughing and sneezing, close personal contact or direct contact with infected nasal or throat secretions. the virus remains active and contagious in the air or on infected surfaces for up to two hours.

Measles outbreaks can result in epidemics that cause many deaths, especially among young malnourished children.

At the two-hour meeting, the coordinator of  the campaign from Lions Clubs, PDG Lion Abdul Majid Khan introduced all the Lions delegates and continued to give long history of how Lions Clubs International started and the various ways it helps the community. He said that the Lions Clubs were happy to see that their services would be required in the national campaign of immunization of Measels and Rubella in Tanzania.

The Manager of the campaign Dr. Dafrossa Lyimo explained in details the entire immunization campaign which will take place in the country in September this year. The regional micro plan workshop will be done in May 2014 to have more precise resources needs.

In general, the objectives of the integrated measles rubella campaign in Tanzania is to * immunize at least 95% of children aged 9 months to 15 years; * immunize at least 95% of children aged 0-59 months with tOPV (oral polio vaccine); * administer vitamin A supplement to 95% of children aged 6- 59 months; * administer de-worming tablets to 95% of children aged 12 to 59 months.

JESSIE BACK IN DAR AFTER MEDICAL TREATMENT

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Lion Jessie Mnguto, a practicing lawyer and a veteran Lion has returned to Dar es Salaam after medical treatment in India. She said in one of her email letters: " I am glad to be back, I feel healthy and this has also been because of your good wishes and prayers."

Lion Jessie Mnguto is also District Convenor for Constitution and by-laws of Sub District 411B (Tanzania and Uganda) and has been past President for Lions Club of Azania.
