"THE QUALITY PROJECT"

Newala, Tanzania: The mega eye camp organized by Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Mzizima at Newala,  has been acclaimed as a "top standard quality project". The best part of the eye camp was that it involved seven remote villages and hamlets in Newala District located close to Tanzania-Mozambique border.

The President of the club, Lion Mustafa Kudrati and his team of eight other Lions spent four full days in Newala and on the road to make sure that the entire project was successful. A total of TShs. 16,000,000/= or US$10,000:00 was spent on this eye camp and more expenses will be involved to carry out surgery of patients detected with advance cataracts.

According to the President, a total of 1,600 people were screened who came from remote villages and from within the township of Newala. Among the lot, 168 patients were identified having cataract problems in their eyes. Doctors from Ndanda Mission Hospital conducted surgeries of 80 people successfully and the rest will go to the Ndanda Hospital for further treatment.

Due to overwhelming demand, the team decided to spend an extra day at Newala. Villagers commented  that free treatments and medicines were not readily available in remote areas.

Opthalmic medicines costing TShs. 1,200,000/=or nearly US$ 750:00 was distributed to the patients after examination by doctors and optometrists. Reading glasses of various positive numbers (850 pairs) were also given to the deserving patients.

Due to the un-friendly weather conditions, the vehicle carrying the Lions and their equipments spent extra hours on the road  due to heavy rains and muddy roads.

THE BOOTS BECAME HISTORY!

The historical story of Late Nelson Mandela's boots which were left at the residence of  Cabinet Minister Late Nsilo Swai in 1962 and handed over to him in 1995 by Lion Vicky Nsilo Swai in Pretoria, South Africa.
Mrs. Vicky Nsilo Swai receiving Lions Leadership Certificate from International Director Lion Alexis V. Gomes and few hours later she was sworn-in as a New Lion Member. A few years ago, the International Director presented Late Nelson Mandela with  a plaque of Melvin Jones Fellow and Lion Vicky Swai presented Late Nelson Mandela his black-colour boots which he had forgotten in the premises of  Cabinet Minister Late A. Nsilo Swai in Dar es Salaam.

HISTORICAL PAIR OF BOOTS!

Sixteen new Members were inducted by International Director Lion Alexis Gomes into the den of Lions two weeks ago in Dar es Salaam.  Among them is one Lion Vicky Nsilo Swai whose name will deserve a few paragraphs  in the biographical  history of  Late Nelson Rolihlahla Dalibunga Mandela.

When Late Nelson Mandela or popularly called Mandiba visited Tanzania, there were logical reasons why he did not put-up in a five-star hotel. The doors of the residential premises of Late A. Nsilo Swai, former Cabinet Minister during the term of  President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, were opened for this great leader of not only South Africa but the Continent of Africa.

Coming to the angle of this story, Late Nelson Mandela either forgot or intentionally left his pair of black leather boots in the premises of Late Nsilo Swai. This was during the year 1962. Mrs. Vicky Nsilo Swai, like a good host and a good house-wife  took care of the boots until 1995 when she officially flew to Pretoria, South Africa to hand-over the historical boots to its owner.

Late Nelson Mandela (1918 -2013) is well recognized as a symbol of wisdom, an architect of equality, an image of goodness, reconciliation and forgiveness. He was a peaceful freedom fighter and for twenty years he directed a campaign of peaceful and non-violent defiance against South Africa’s Government policy of Racism and Apartheid.

Late Nelson Mandela had a charismatic and magnetic personality. During his State Burial Ceremony not less than seventy Head of States and representatives of various Governments, diplomats, high ranking religious leaders in thousands attended the solemn ceremonies.

We wish to re-quote the words of Late Madiba: “I hate race discrimination most intensely and in all its manifestation. I have fought it all during my life, I fight it now and will do so, until the end of my life.” May God rest his soul in Eternal Peace…Amen.

Note: Lion Vicky Nsilo Swai is now Lion Member of Lions Club of Moshi Kibo, in Kilimanjaro Region.

The organizations which make things happen
The "World Immunization Week" will be observed from 24th to 30th April throughout the world and the District 411B, Tanzania and Uganda will also participate in the immunization campaign.

It is important to see how the Lions Clubs in both the countries  have accomplished in the fight against measles.

MEMBERSHIP STATISTICS GOES UP, UP AND UP

The statistics of members under District 411B (Tanzania & Uganda) is graphically  on the rise but the target of 1250 members is yet to be accomplished. According to the health assessment report flashed by Lions Clubs International, the figure of membership was 1154 by the end of December last year and by the end of January this year it increased  to 1164 under 42 clubs.

Copies of the health assessment report accompanied by an observation from the GMT District Coordinator, PDG Lion Abdul Majid Khan was distributed to Cabinet,  District Officers and club leaders. In his remarks, PDG Lion Khan has passionately urged all Lions leaders to close the exit doors so as to bring success to the Governor's aspirations to reach the required target by end of April this year.

Club leaders have been seriously urged to remit their international dues on or before 15th February and to explore all the possibilities of recruiting quality members, at least three new members per club. Uganda sector has accomplished the target of chartering two new clubs where as Tanzania has yet to hit the target of at least two new clubs as per the district goals set by the Governor.

One Lions club in Arua in Uganda was cancelled for failing to adhere to payment of international dues. Consequently the district lost 34 members. With a sad note, this club was" in red" which meant status quo for eight times within the period of two years.  Cabinet and District officers in Uganda have been urged to work collectively to revive the club within the next few weeks so as to alter the course of the sub district.

Governor Lion Wilson Ndesanjo inducts new members in Dar es Salaam and  gives them his "Lionism" advice. This photograph was taken during a reception in his honour by the Fraternity Club of Dar es Salaam.
One encouraging remark by the GMT District Coordinator was that there was no club under status quo but the remittance of international dues has to be paid before the deadline, ie within the next seven days starting from today.

INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR'S BANQUET

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: A colourful banquet in honour of the visiting International Director Alexis Vincent Gomes was held at the five-star Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam on Saturday (1st Feb) night and ended much beyond midnight hours.

The almost six-hours banquet was loaded with enthralling acrobatic tricks by a local cultural troupe, long speeches by prominent people including the Chief Guest, presentation of personal friendship banners and lapel pins, presentation of awards to Lions Members with long service beginning with ten years to forty years, presentation of a special memento to the Chief Guest on behalf of seven lions Clubs in Dar es Salaam, delicious and spicey supper with oriental and occidental dishes crowned with many type of sweet dishes etc.

It turned out to be a night to remember when the main speech of the evening was delivered by the Chief Guest in his well-familiar tongue....French.  An interpreter with a good standard of English accent was around to make the director's speech laudable and enjoyable by all.

The director is on record to have promised his Listeners that he will re-visit Tanzania and make sure that he will talk in the National language of Tanzania...Kiswahili. In actual fact he began his speech by uttering a Kiswahili sentence "habari za jioni?" (meaning how are you this evening). The manner and style of uttering this short sentence, almost in an aristocratic manner, captured the audience attention throughout his speech.
