NEW LIONS CLUB IN ZANZIBAR

CHOLERA VICTIMS ASSISTED BY MZIZIMA CLUB

A new Lions Club is in the offing in Zanzibar with efforts and sponsorship of Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Mzizima. The morale booster of this venture was District Governor Lion Hayderali Gangji and a stalwart of Mzizima Lions Club Lion Mustafa Kudrati.

Potential Members have been earmarked and preparations are afoot to form a new club which may be chartered during the Governorship of Hayderali Gangji. His reign of authority ends in two months time after a smooth take-over by incoming Governor from Uganda.

During the delegation’s visit to Zanzibar, the Governor paid salutations to the President of Zanzibar who is also Chairman of the Revolutionary Council of Zanzibar, Hon. Dr. Ally Mohamed Shein. They also met the Minister for Health, Hon. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo.

The potential members of the new club (under formation) with cooperation of Mzizima Lions Club of Dar es Salaam, sprinted into action by helping the people affected by Cholera at Chumbini, an area out of the main Zanzibar town. Mineral water, dry foodstuff such as biscuits, and water cleansing chlorine all roughly estimated at TShs. 4,500,000/=. The new club in the offing raised a donation of TShs. 1,500,000/=.

A couple of years ago, Zanzibar had a Lions Club but due to one reason or the other, it died a natural death after only a very number of Lions struggled to keep it afloat. The visitation of the Governor and Mzizima Members appears to have created a fervour among the potential members with the first project to save human lives from the scourge of  cholera  epidemic disease. According to (unconfirmed) reports forty people have died because of cholera and others are being treated at the Chumbini Cholera camp.

The prompt guidance and cooperation of the Minister Hon. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo greatly assisted in implementing the project to help cholera victims.
