"LION OF THE YEAR...RESHMA SHAH"

LION RESHMA SHAH: “ LION OF THE YEAR 2014/2015”
Home Club: LIONS CLUB OF DAR ES SALAAM PWANI
A PROFILE “AS I SEE IT” BY ABDUL HAI
The plump but active,  and  always-smiling Reshma Shah is truly a “rising star” in the world of Lionism. With only twenty-four  months track record as a Lion, she was bestowed  the “Lion Of The Year” trophy from her home club, Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Pwani.

In a short span of time, her distinguished achievement is similar to the historical quotation: “ I came, I saw and I conquered”. She decided to join and serve as a Lion when she was celebrating her 25th birthday in September.

The glittering silvery  medium-size cup was presented to her amidst Lions and invited guests at an Installation  function of leaders of three clubs at the high-class New Africa Hotel. The presentation was made by a Veteran Lion, Past District Governor/Past Multiple Council Chairman, Abdul Majid Khan. “Keep it up, Reshma and congratulations”, was the morale boosting  presentation remarks.

And from Nairobi, the most prominent Lion Leader of international repute, PID /PDG/PMCC and the aspiring candidate  for the post of International President Lion Dr.  Manoj Shah,  sent congratulatory message to Reshma Shah. This was a very prompt reaction by the Lion “pundit”  barely few hours after presentation.

"You are the best, Reshma," a message conveyed by 2nd Vice District Governor Lion Rizwan Qadri.

My inquisitive “journalist nose”  led me to pursue an interview with her, just because she was  holding a sensitive post in the current District Governor’s Cabinet: Information Technology Chairperson and Decisive Officer in judging performance of  Lions clubs, District and Cabinet Officers during 2015/2016.  Her committee’s  verdict  will be the influencing factor when the Governor recognizes and  presents appreciation awards and trophies during the annual MD Convention end of May 2016 in Dar es Salaam.

Just who is Reshma Shah and how come she is described as a “Rising Star” or a Lion Leader in the making?

The charming and always-smiling Reshma Shah is a Banker by profession with a degree of Masters in Business Administration in finance from the University of Wales in United Kingdom. To add another line to her academic qualifications, she passed in First Division with honours! Before going for further studies, she had achieved the Bachelor Degree  in Business Studies at the University of Greenwich, also in the United Kingdom.

She is Tanzanian by Nationality, and  having accomplished her secondary education in Tanzania, she had an ambition to pursue further studies,  “as fast and as high as could be possible”. This was her hidden motive of determination.  With the support of her family, she flew higher and higher.

She has attended several courses in her relevant field of banking which include credit management organized by the Bank of Tanzania (BOT); a course organized by Tanzania Institute of Bankers in the sect of Certified Professional Banking.

Her thirst for banking education led her to India where she attended and passed in “A Class” the Business Banking Course at the Institute of Banking & Commerce. She also holds a certificate in the field of “Mortgage Finance Training” at Frankfurt School in Federal Republic of Germany.

Her aptitude and  the love for the banking profession, led her to hold a responsible position in a popular bank called Bank (M) Ltd Corporate Branch in Dar es Salaam. Indeed, serious hard work pays when she was declared and awarded the “Best Employee Of the Year”.

Judging by her speech (thanks giving) at the function at New Africa Hotel, someone quietly confided in me that she possessed excellent verbal communication skills. Perhaps these qualities led her to use her talents in her community Shree Jain Sangh Dar es Salaam. She also plays part in the sports activities of her communal organization.

She now holds the sensitive post of  conveying information, on regular basis, to Lion Members  within the Sub District 411 (Tanzania-Uganda) under  Lions Clubs International. In her, I am prejudiced to say as a Journalist, that she could be a good  responsible  writer or a reporter.

Freedom of the pen brings responsibilities and burdens and we have to face them in the spirit of free and disciplined people. As committed Lions, our responsibilities and burdens can well be understood if we adhere completely and absolutely to the principles and purposes on which Lions Clubs International was formed one hundred years ago by Melvin Jones, the Founding Father.

Therefore, in whatever capacity we may be involved in, we should try our best within our ability to work for the realization of these principles and purposes. (The concept written in bold is my interpretation of the speech delivered by the First Prime Minister of India, Late Jawaharlal Nehru to Journalists Meeting on  15th August 1947).
