KIGOMA, TANZANIA: Kigoma, situated on the extreme western part of Tanzania will be the venue of free-for-all Eye & Ear Medical Camps during the last week of September.
Appropriately called Kigoma Satelite Unit, was financed as a grant of US$ 96,500 or approximately TShs. 154,400,000/= by Lions Clubs International Fund (LCIF) through the Sub District 411B via Lions Club of dar es Salaam Mzizima. The region of Kigoma was suggested by the Ministry of Health of Tanzania Government as an ideal venue for improving medical facilities and for also conducting free eye and ear camps for the public.
The Lions Club of Mzizima, recepient of the best club award during 2012/2013, will send nine members to Kigoma along with nine members from the United States based Starkey Foundation to conduct the two camps.
The District Chairperson for Sight First in Tanzania, Lion Shanti Shah who was also past President of the club gave a nutshell information about the entire project, acclaimed to be one of the best Quality Project undertaken by Lions. The LCIF in June 2011 approved two Satelite Units for Tanzania and Uganda each at US$ 96,500 under grant number SF 1527/411B. After extensive consultation and advice, Kigoma Town appeared to be in dire need of improved medical facilities.
The project was completed in May this year and was officially handed over to the Regional Hospital of Kigoma on 4th July this year. The reigning club President is Lion Mustafa Kudrati. Following are the salient features of the project.
* The Kigoma Satelite Unit was established at the Kigoma Regional Hospital by constructing and renovating the building and procuring eye care equipments.
* To conduct rapid assessment of avoidable blindness.
* Constructed three consultation rooms.
* Constructed a room for conducting meetings and for brief resting.
* Room for optical workshop.
* Mini store room
* Sterilisation Room.
* Operating theatre
* Toilet facilities.
