"THE QUALITY PROJECT"

Newala, Tanzania: The mega eye camp organized by Lions Club of Dar es Salaam Mzizima at Newala,  has been acclaimed as a "top standard quality project". The best part of the eye camp was that it involved seven remote villages and hamlets in Newala District located close to Tanzania-Mozambique border.

The President of the club, Lion Mustafa Kudrati and his team of eight other Lions spent four full days in Newala and on the road to make sure that the entire project was successful. A total of TShs. 16,000,000/= or US$10,000:00 was spent on this eye camp and more expenses will be involved to carry out surgery of patients detected with advance cataracts.

According to the President, a total of 1,600 people were screened who came from remote villages and from within the township of Newala. Among the lot, 168 patients were identified having cataract problems in their eyes. Doctors from Ndanda Mission Hospital conducted surgeries of 80 people successfully and the rest will go to the Ndanda Hospital for further treatment.

Due to overwhelming demand, the team decided to spend an extra day at Newala. Villagers commented  that free treatments and medicines were not readily available in remote areas.

Opthalmic medicines costing TShs. 1,200,000/=or nearly US$ 750:00 was distributed to the patients after examination by doctors and optometrists. Reading glasses of various positive numbers (850 pairs) were also given to the deserving patients.

Due to the un-friendly weather conditions, the vehicle carrying the Lions and their equipments spent extra hours on the road  due to heavy rains and muddy roads.
