32 GRANTS APPROVED FOR SIGHT FIRST

A total of 32 Grants worth US$ 7,475,345 was approved by the Sight First Advisory Committee during its meeting held last August and this figure is inclusive of several grants for Tanzania and Uganda under the umbrella of Sub District 411B.

UGANDA: A grant of US$ 175,000 to the Lions of Uganda and The Carter Centre to continue assisting the ministry of Health in efforts to eliminate or treat River Blindness. The project plans to treat and protect over 701,593 people against River Blindness.

In addition to that the Molecular Laboratory in Kampala will conduct epidemiological surveys which will help assess progress towards ending the transmission of River Blindness in the country.

A Grant of US$ 25,000 was given by the SAC to acknowledge and show high appreciation to the Lions of Uganda for the estimable advocacy work of mass mobilization and educating the community at large. This grant is awarded by SAC.

TANZANIA: The Brien Holden Vision Institute in Bariadi District in Tanzania was awarded US$ 80,000 as Research Grant. This grant will investigate whether children (Vision Champion) could identify and refer other children to their country, with refrective errors and other obvious eye diseases.

The Institute will also research whether Vision Champs would also improve knowledge, attitude and practice Eye Health behavior.
